Do you feel overwhelmed with your todo list? Is "creating fulfilling happiness" missing from that list? Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat is here to help you. In 2-minutes a day, over time, you’ll discover how to reduce overwhelm and create lasting happiness through Katie’s signature method of Intentional Margins, happiness science, and musings about life. Start your day with a positive mindset. Many of us can get deep in the feeling of overwhelm. The anxiety of our own ambition can weigh heavily on our thoughts and emotions. We lay down and close our eyes at night and our chest begins to feel heavy. More items on the to-do list than the day before. How will we ever going to get off the hamster wheel of to-dos? When are we going to start living life for more than the hustle? As a recovering lawyer and passion driven entrepreneur, Katie knew something had to change. What she found is that you can have harmony, be intentionally productive and create massive impact, all at the same time - without feeling guilty. So she asked herself a simple question: "How can I get off the hamster wheel and how can I show others how to do the same? She knew she'd had a system for herself, but she’d never put it into defining words. On August 15, 2019, she sat down at her dining room table with her friend Jenna (her business bestie). Post-It notes covering the table. This is where she first defined the concept of Intentional Margins. What are Intentional Margins? INTENTIONAL MARGINS™ (n): A buffer of space and time to create harmony between your to-do’s and your priorities. Now you can get the support you need to manage your overwhelm, one little tip at a time. Regardless of the industry, Everyday Happiness blends inspiration with a pragmatic approach to finding Harmony. You'll be encouraged to throw “balance” out the window for a more achievable approach called harmony. Through Intentional Margins™, you'll be encouraged to develop what harmony means to you, by identifying your priorities at work and at home. Every day, we'll end the podcast help you feel equipped to jump off the hamster wheel of overwhelm and go out there and crush your day. --About the Host-- Katie Jefcoat is a community curator, speaker, author and motivator who supports ambitious women (and a few good men) move from feeling hectic to harmonious. As a recovering trial lawyer, she knows first hand what it feels like to have a demanding job. As an entrepreneur with a passion that lights her hair on fire and a busy family she’s in the thick of it with you. Many people strive for balance and think overwhelm is just a part of life. Sadly, the hustle culture and our never-ending to-do list is creating a life where our priorities are getting the leftover scraps of time. Katie introduces people to what she calls - Intentional Margins™ - a kind of life in which they reduce randomness, create harmony between their to-dos and their priorities and intentionally enjoy the meaningful parts of life - without feeling guilty. Without exposure to a different way, we remain stuck on the hamster wheel of to-dos and never find the “balance” we yearn for. Katie works diligently to expose her community to different ways of doing things, because she fundamentally believes we deserve to make time for our priorities. We deserve to live a life of harmony. And it’s within our control to create it. Katie curates a smorgasbord of content related to managing your calendar, handling overwhelm, setting boundaries, reducing randomness, saying no, self-care, the power of your choices, and more in her Intentional Margins™ Membership Community -- which she calls the coziest virtual coffee shop (on Facebook). 233-Intentional Memories
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
When I heard this concept I loved it! Creating intentional memories. Let’s talk about how this works in today’s show.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness, where we create lasting happiness in two minutes a day through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host, Katie Jefcoat, and my friend Ryan sent me a Facebook message this week about this concept he heard and it's so good. I, of course, had to share it with you.
He said that it's this idea of creating intentional memories. He had just heard this and sent me a message right away. He had me at— intentional. So here's how it goes:
At the beginning of the year or the quarter or really anytime at all, you can do this with your family or just yourself. You think about what are the intentional memories I want to create in this
time frame and then you write them down.
So what are the intentional memories I want to create this year? My kids have all kinds of ideas, like make a sandcastle at the beach, have lots of sleepovers, go go-cart racing and indoor skydiving, more movie time with popcorn and use the indoor s'mores machine that we got for Christmas, do three puzzles… I mean, the ideas are endless! And this is such a fun idea and works great with family to get a feel of where you want to be and what their Intentional Margins® and priorities are.
If you could also do this yourself, it would be so easy, right? What are some intentional memories you want to create this year? I can think of so many for me. From reading a magazine at the beach, date night with my husband at least once a month, movie night with the kids...
The ideas really are endless.
So what would you choose as an intentional memory? It's so fun to dream. Let us know over at @everydayhappinesswithkatie on social. We'd love to hear what your intentional memories are, and I am confident that your idea will inspire someone else. And isn't that the best part?
Like the ripple effect. It's so much fun.

232-Intentional Margins® Create Happiness
Wednesday Jan 19, 2022
Wednesday Jan 19, 2022
Intentional Margins® create happiness because when we are in harmony and fulfilling our priorities, we can’t help but feel happiness.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and a Margin Maker in our monthly membership said this recently and it struck me. She realized she was creating margins for happiness. For what was fulfilling and purposeful to her. In turn, she said she’s happier.
If you have these Intentional Margins®, whether it’s a buffer of time between appointments and obligations to take a deep breath and be intentional about how you want to show up, or a longer Intentional Margin to spend some time doing something that lights your hair on fire or feeds you.
If you have Intentional Margin® it’s a lot harder to be stressed out when we are running from thing to thing. I truly believe we can be busy and balanced, if we are focusing our time on the right things, our priorities, in this season. And, with the awareness that we can always pivot.
I encourage you, like we do in the membership, to write down your Intentional Margin® for the day. It can be a walk with your dog, 30-minutes to gather your thoughts and journal or sit quietly. It can be 2 minutes to just reframe your mindset before jumping on a call or picking up your kid from school. All of these margins matter. Over time and combined, they make us happier.
The last thing any of us want is to get to the end of the week, the end of the year, or god forbid the end of life and wonder what it was all for. Checking off the todo list of other people’s priorities is going to feel really crappy if that’s what we see when we look back. Instead, I invite you to create an Intentional Margin® for yourself that promotes some calm and happiness, that invites you to act in service of whatever your priority is right now.
This is all about finding the harmony between our todos and our priorities because what I know for sure, is that checking off the todo list does not create a fulfilled happy life.
So, what will your Intentional Margins® be today, let us know so we can celebrate you!

231-Q&A How Do You “Do It All” Part-2
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022

In this 2-part show, I answer the question I get most often - How do I do it?
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and yesterday we talked about help and today, boundaries.
So, how do I spend my time? What does that look like? Well, I have an ideal week. It’s what helps me prioritize my buckets. You can google search for ideal week online or join my membership for $15/month and there is a section with tools and templates and video that helps you create your ideal week and we always answer questions inside the membership.
I set firm boundaries around my time, what I am available for and how I want to create my best life. That starts with how I create my best day, for me.
We talked about my anti-mourning routine in episode 199. I encourage you to listen, but the gist of it is that my first hour in the morning is not filled with quiet time, meditation, reading and so on like so many of the guru’s tell you how to set up your day for success. I truly believe you listen to your body and know, there are a million ways to do anything, and we need to do what works for us.
So I wake up about 6:45, get coffee and get into my office by 7am where I get a 1-hour power hour to only work on content for this show. It’s when I’m most inspired and alert. At 8am it’s all hands on deck with our daily family meeting where we get the kids breakfast, set them up for their day, chat and have some family time. This is also when we do dishes and tidy up the kitchen. 8:30 I’m out the door driving to school. Back at 9:15 with a 15-minute check-in coffee time with my husband who is still working from home.
By 10am I’m in work mode until about Noon or 1:00 in the afternoon. This year, I’m trying to move my body more, so I have an hour blocked off from 1:30-2:30 to move my body. We’ll see how that goes. At 2:30 I’m doing my workday shutdown routine of closing the loop on emails, social, looking at my day for tomorrow, all the little tasks. And at 3:30 I’m out the door to do school pickup.
After 3:30 I don’t plan on getting more work done. If I need to or I have some time, great, if not, no sweat.
And there you have it, boundaries around my time. You’ll also notice I have built in Intentional Margins® so that I’m not stressed transitioning from one thing to the next. For example, it takes me about 30 minutes for my workday shutdown ritual. But I have an hour, which is super important because when I pick the kids up from school, I want to be intentional about where my headspace is at. I want to be present and engaged when my little guy jumps in the car to tell me about his day - no distractions. That’s a priority for me, so I make sure I have more than enough time to get that done.
Now, I am fully aware that is a luxury and you can hear that and be rolling your eyes thinking - yeah, no way. I get it. But I encourage you to even create a 2 or 3-minute margin as a transition to take a deep breath, ask yourself how you want to show up and what your intention is for the very next thing. I promise this goes a long way.
By setting boundaries on when I work on certain projects (and not check email or social), it allows me to really dial in my time. I’m also pretty clear that it would have to be really important to cut into the 8am family meeting, because that time is a very high priority for me. When you know what your boundaries are, they are much easier to stick to. I invite you to give it a try.

230-Q&A How Do You “Do It All” Part-1
Monday Jan 17, 2022
Monday Jan 17, 2022
In this show I answer the question I get most often - How do I do it?
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I get this question all the time: How do you do it? Give me the secret playbook so I can do it all too. Friend, first, I don’t. Let’s break this down into 2 parts. Today, I am going to talk about help and tomorrow, about boundaries and give you a sneak peak into my day.
First, I get help when I need help. Right now in my company, that looks like a virtual assistant who I affectionately refer to as “the Chief of Everything”. She keeps the wheels on the bus with the podcast, the social, the launches. I also have a podcast team that takes my recordings and transcripts (that I format and write) and then does all the tech so that you get it delivered to the podcast platforms you listen to on the daily. I also have a tech person that I go to when I get stuck. She mostly works on my website. I just hired a copyright person that helps me with my written words for recurring emails, blogs and things like that when I need an editor and a fresh set of eyes.
At home, I have a cleaning service for my house and a lawn service for my yard. Those fundamentals allow me to do all the things.
Don’t be fooled when you see someone on social media that looks like they are doing it all - they’re not.
I know that I am fortunate to have help.
If you see someone hustling, it’s coming at the cost of something else, I guarantee it.
And for me, the cost is time to do the things I want. I want more time, not more money, so I outsource and take less of a salary. There are a million ways to do anything, and you get to figure out what works best for you.
Ok, tomorrow we’re talking about boundaries when it looks like someone is doing it all. I can’t wait to dive in. See you tomorrow.

229-Are Irrational Fears Holding Us Back From Happiness?
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
Some people say fear is false evidence appearing real. Well, what does that mean for a scardy-cat like me and is my fear of something bad happening in the future precluding me from present happiness? Let’s dive in during today’s show.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I was thinking about fear lately. It was sparked by a documentary I saw where Jack Canfield, creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul said that fear was all in our mind and that everything we were fearful of was something in the future and not in this present moment. That got me thinking. You see, I am a worrier. I am fearful of a lot of things. And if I check myself, it’s all in the future.
He said in this documentary, if you see a snake slithering by your feet, the fear is that in the future it will bite you. But in the present it’s just a snake. Let me be clear -- I see a snake, I’m climbing the wall and scared as hell. No way would that work. But, I’m open minded and it got me thinking … ok, maybe what I am fearful of is a lot of the future.
They say fear is False Evidence Appearing Real. I thought it was so fascinating that I wanted to share this idea with you. Perhaps it could help you calm some of your fears. I’m super cautious, but the next time I feel fearful, I will remind myself that this is my brain delivering false evidence that hasn’t actually happened yet. I don’t know how much it will work, but what I do know is that we just need to make a little progress everyday and it doesn’t have to be a life-changing transformation for real progress to happen.
Now, being scared of snakes, I’ll still jump out of my skin if I see one. But I’m trying to think of how I can re-frame some other fears, that might be more irrational, or as my kids would say “scaredy-cat”.
This all got me thinking about happiness. We can’t hold two emotions at one time. It’s impossible. So if I am holding on to fear, am I happy?
The next time I am feeling fearful, I will turn the lips of my mouth up to form a smile and ask myself if this fear is real? I don’t know how it will work, but I’m trying it. What do you think? Would this tip work for you? We’d love to hear how it’s working. We’re @everydayhappinesswithkatie on social.

228-January Blues And Mood Busting Tips Part-2
Saturday Jan 15, 2022
Saturday Jan 15, 2022
Bad days happen, but what can we do to boost those blues and pivot toward happiness. In this 2-part series we’ll give you tons of ideas.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and we are jam packed with tips to beat those blues. Wow, yesterday was so good, right? I mean, I felt like I learned so much and I just love when we ask questions, people deliver.
Speaking of delivering, let’s jump right in. My friend Karsta has a 1-minute self care moment. It’s 3 deep breaths (eyes closed) when you open, find 5 things you can see (that are beautiful to you), 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel/touch, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. She says it just snaps you out of the funk.
She also says that if she knows it’s about to be one of those days, she has a little visualization practice that she does where she pictures herself inside a warm pink bubble. She says it’s almost like a shield where she doesn’t allow her mood to leak onto others or for someone else’s nonsense to make her even crankier. I love this idea.
Oh my gosh, my friend Laura loves an acronym and she’s shared 2 great ones with me. She has 10 go to coping mechanisms for bad moods or when she’s feeling what she calls RID - R-I-D (restless, irritable, discontent) or HALT - H-A-L-T (hungry, angry/anxious, lonely, tired) . Here is her list:
- Exercise
- Read
- Make a gratitude list
- Meditate or breathe
- Do something thoughtful for someone else
- Eat a snack
- Power nap
- Pet my kitties or bunny
- Fix my hair
- Put on lipstick
What if you made your own list, can you imagine the empowerment you could have over your own bad day.
I saw an article in Greatist that gave a bunch of ideas, the article is linked in the show notes. It has ideas like light a candle, count your blessings, hangout with a pet, achieve a goal, meditate, laugh, declutter something. There are a ton more ideas in the article to get you thinking about what would work perfectly for you.
I invite you to make a list of a few things that you could do that would work for you, to flip the switch when you find yourself in a bad mood. We’ve all been there. And frankly, we’ll be there again, but maybe next time, you’ll have a way to reduce that mood and move on more quickly.
Let me know your ideas, we could all use a few more. Do a IG story and tag us or send us a DM, @everydayhappinesswithkatie.

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I recently posted on my Facebook friends asking them for mood boosting tips when they are feeling less than happy and they need a reset. I was so surprised by their great ideas that I am sharing some with you today and tomorrow.
Look, bad days happen. No one is always happy. That’s not the goal. We need to feel all of our emotions when we have them. This discussion is for the time when your coffee machine breaks -- can you imagine the horror? Or your car won’t start, or you get pooped on by a bird when walking to a really important meeting while you are dressed in your power suit, ready to impress. Yeah, that happened to me. It was not pretty. But we survive, right?
So, maybe it feels like it’s been a long week and it’s time to reset, shake out the old and invite in a different mood. That’s what we’re talking about today and tomorrow.
The overwhelming theme from my friends was to get outside and go for a walk. The fresh air. Moving the body. This seems to be a great start for so many. But that’s not all, listen to some of these great ideas:
My friend Amie shared with us her tip to do 30 minutes of red or blue light therapy. Alright, this one got me. I have to Google this to figure it out, but it sounds cool, so I’ll be off to hang out on Google after the episode.
A lot of friends said meditation. And my friend Mathew had a great reset that I need to try, he said try taking a relaxing shower and throw in some lavender salts too. Now that sounds delightful.
I love the idea of a dance break, something to move my body, even pushups or jumping jacks.
My friend Chris and I think a couple others said playing with their dog or journaling. Both great ideas.
My friend C Lee loves to focus her mind on something productive and positive that’s quick, like cleaning out a drawer, a crossword puzzle, something with quick satisfaction. I mean, brilliant, right?
Tomorrow, I'll give you the juiciest of tips for beating the blues with Karsta and Laura’s tips, along with some research I found on this very subject. Until next time.

226-My Word Of The Year -Finally
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Thursday Jan 13, 2022
Today I share my word of the year and how I intend to use it as a theme for the year.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I finally decided on my word of the year. Last week, the members in my community gathered over Zoom to chat about our words and why we chose them. It was so insightful and there were a lot of great words from: Evolve, Visible, Support, Connected, Financial Strength, Progress, Refining, Fortitude and our community word, Expansive.
What a fun list right? The inspiration is endless and if you recall in episode 214, I had been contemplating my word. And I came up with - simplicity. After chewing on minimalist, it didn't quite seem to have the overall feeling I was going for. So I chose simplicity and it feels right. Simple digestible content here on Everyday Happiness. Simple boundaries to create the life I design. Simple surroundings which includes less clutter around my house and especially my office. And a steam-line on clearing the clutter of what I consume so that I am intentional about the content I consume and I hold my boundaries about consuming the content that doesn’t serve me.
So, there you have it, my word of the year is simplicity. Have you chosen your word? We’d love to hear what it is. Tag us in a social post @everydayhappinesswithkatie and share your word of the year.
And, if you enjoy listening, please subscribe to wherever you are tuning in from. And if you are feeling a bit kind, writing a 5-star review really does help us organically reach more people that are, like you, interested in creating the ripple effect of kindness.

225-New Year’s Resolutions
Wednesday Jan 12, 2022
Wednesday Jan 12, 2022
Do you create New Year’s resolutions? I invite you to think about a happiness resolution. Let’s talk about how you do that.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I’m curious. Do you start New Year’s resolutions? Do you keep them? Do you have one for this year? Here in the Northeast, 2022 has gotten off to a rocky start with the weather. My kids have been out of school the first week of January. Not that I’m complaining, I secretly love having them home. But I’ve got to think there are other places where 2022 could use a reset. Adding the Omicron variant and global pandemic on top of the rocky start and us humans are feeling the fatigue. I get it.
So, do you ever pivot on your New Year’s resolution? Personally, I do a word of the year and try to make that a theme. I’ve finally settled on my word. I’ll share it tomorrow.
But back to resolutions. There are some that could help boost your happiness this year. A lot of people make resolutions like paying down debt or losing weight. But what if those types of resolutions are actually setting ourselves up for failure? What if our resolutions don’t have to be a sacrifice?
I invite you to think about a happiness resolution, like a simple habit. Something small, doable and with little sacrifice. For example, gratitude. Sometimes it can be hard to see what we are grateful for as we forge through a pandemic and weather and climate change and political unrest. I would argue that everyone has something to be grateful for, and the happiness rewards of focusing on those things are incredibly enormous. What you focus on grows. We know this. I invite you to consider flipping the script and focusing on gratitude.
This micro-podcast is littered with examples and studies on how gratitude boosts happiness, so it makes perfect sense that we start the new year with tiny gratitude habits that can truly change your quality of life.
Until next time. Share a message of gratitude with someone you love.

224-Internal Happiness
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
Achieving fulfilled happiness is an internal job. As much as we want to think there are hacks and tips and ideas that create happiness, at the end of the day, I think it’s within us.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and achieving fulfilled happiness is an internal job. As much as we want to think there are hacks and tips and ideas that create happiness, at the end of the day, I think it’s within us. Of course, I’ll share ways to boost happiness. It helps. But if you bring that down to the micro level, it’s internal.
There is science indicating that we can create lasting happiness over time by doing simple things that change the neurons in our brains. That’s cool. And it works. But before we get to the part, we have to believe that what we are doing matters and is making tiny progress toward the bigger goal, which in this case is fulfilled happiness.
So if you are saying out loud or writing down your list of gratitudes while rolling your eyes, you are not going to have the same outcome as someone who is really feeling grateful and appreciative for their list of gratitudes.
We’ve talked at length about how this is the journey, the long game, we never really reach the top of the mountain -- that’s not the goal. And for us goal achievers out there, me included, it’s a mindset shift we have to get behind first, before we can reap the rewards of the happiness journey.
Instead of looking at happiness as a destination - when I get {fill in the blank}, I’ll be happier, more satisfied, more content - as if it’s a straight line. I invite you to think of happiness as a continuous circle, or a wheel, one where you experience all of the emotions and just put a little more focus on happiness.
There’s that saying, “what you focus on grows”, so I wonder, what are you focusing on today? Let us know on social @everydayhappinesswithkatie. And if you’d rather get this delivered to your inbox to read or click the play link, you can sign up over at www.katiejefcoat.com/happiness
