Do you feel overwhelmed with your todo list? Is "creating fulfilling happiness" missing from that list? Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat is here to help you. In 2-minutes a day, over time, you’ll discover how to reduce overwhelm and create lasting happiness through Katie’s signature method of Intentional Margins, happiness science, and musings about life. Start your day with a positive mindset. Many of us can get deep in the feeling of overwhelm. The anxiety of our own ambition can weigh heavily on our thoughts and emotions. We lay down and close our eyes at night and our chest begins to feel heavy. More items on the to-do list than the day before. How will we ever going to get off the hamster wheel of to-dos? When are we going to start living life for more than the hustle? As a recovering lawyer and passion driven entrepreneur, Katie knew something had to change. What she found is that you can have harmony, be intentionally productive and create massive impact, all at the same time - without feeling guilty. So she asked herself a simple question: "How can I get off the hamster wheel and how can I show others how to do the same? She knew she'd had a system for herself, but she’d never put it into defining words. On August 15, 2019, she sat down at her dining room table with her friend Jenna (her business bestie). Post-It notes covering the table. This is where she first defined the concept of Intentional Margins. What are Intentional Margins? INTENTIONAL MARGINS™ (n): A buffer of space and time to create harmony between your to-do’s and your priorities. Now you can get the support you need to manage your overwhelm, one little tip at a time. Regardless of the industry, Everyday Happiness blends inspiration with a pragmatic approach to finding Harmony. You'll be encouraged to throw “balance” out the window for a more achievable approach called harmony. Through Intentional Margins™, you'll be encouraged to develop what harmony means to you, by identifying your priorities at work and at home. Every day, we'll end the podcast help you feel equipped to jump off the hamster wheel of overwhelm and go out there and crush your day. --About the Host-- Katie Jefcoat is a community curator, speaker, author and motivator who supports ambitious women (and a few good men) move from feeling hectic to harmonious. As a recovering trial lawyer, she knows first hand what it feels like to have a demanding job. As an entrepreneur with a passion that lights her hair on fire and a busy family she’s in the thick of it with you. Many people strive for balance and think overwhelm is just a part of life. Sadly, the hustle culture and our never-ending to-do list is creating a life where our priorities are getting the leftover scraps of time. Katie introduces people to what she calls - Intentional Margins™ - a kind of life in which they reduce randomness, create harmony between their to-dos and their priorities and intentionally enjoy the meaningful parts of life - without feeling guilty. Without exposure to a different way, we remain stuck on the hamster wheel of to-dos and never find the “balance” we yearn for. Katie works diligently to expose her community to different ways of doing things, because she fundamentally believes we deserve to make time for our priorities. We deserve to live a life of harmony. And it’s within our control to create it. Katie curates a smorgasbord of content related to managing your calendar, handling overwhelm, setting boundaries, reducing randomness, saying no, self-care, the power of your choices, and more in her Intentional Margins™ Membership Community -- which she calls the coziest virtual coffee shop (on Facebook). 313-How To Declare Email Bankruptcy
Sunday Apr 10, 2022

Declaring Email bankruptcy and starting fresh was a game changer for me, and today, I’m going to share with you how I did it.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and if you listened yesterday to the episode about declaring clutter bankruptcy, I wanted to follow up with a hack for email too. Email and paper are by far my two biggest and chronic problems in staying organized, staying clear focused and staying on my game. I’m in a constant state of struggle with keeping up with the email and paper.
Thankfully, my friend C Lee’s course has helped me put systems into place for most of the paper. And this email system does work for me. But I will warn you, it’s not a one and done for me. I’ve declared email bankruptcy multiple times.
Here’s how it works. Create a folder in your email system called “bankruptcy April 2022” or whenever you are doing this. You can also use “Archive April 2022” The words don’t matter as long as it is something you can remember. If you do this more than once you can even nest your bankruptcy folders - oh yeah, I’ve been then.
This does two things. First, it immediately gets you to Inbox Zero with a clean slate. This feels amazing. Second, it keeps everything in a searchable archive so it you are looking for that recipe a friend sent you, a confirmation for the sweater you ordered online, it’s all there. And if you use Gmail, it’s all very searchable.
You can also, at your leisure, review your bankruptcy folder and mass delete from specific senders and look for items that you really do want to organize in your email reference folder, for example. Most of the time, if someone needs something from you and you haven’t responded, they will email again, so this system works pretty well.
If you use the snooze feature on Gmail, the snoozed email will pop up in your inbox at the time you indicated.
So, that’s my tip for clearing the email clutter so that you can feel less stressed, less overwhelmed and that translates to a little bit happier. If you are interested in how to banish that paper clutter, you have a couple days to jump into the course, the Paper Cleanse. You can get our Everyday Happiness link in the show notes. And remember, kindness is contagious, so go out there into the world and be extra kind to someone today.

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I felt like I just had to tell you more about paper clutter, because I’ve fallen victim to the trap of paper everywhere and feeling so overwhelmed. I heard about declaring email bankruptcy years ago and I’ve adapted it to paper. I’ll share about how to clear your inbox tomorrow.
So when it comes to paper. I want to focus on the paper that happen to be printouts of a freebie, a handout, drafts of work you are doing. It’s the paper around your office that are notes, Post-its, all of those pieces of paper.
I am a paper lover. I write notes on paper, not on a computer. I look at drafts on paper. I print too much. And what happens over time is that those notes accumulate. And the piles get bigger and bigger. What I have found is that I can get a box - I like to use what is called a “bankers box” . It is a sturdy box that has a cover that is meant for paper.
You can take this empty box and literally put all of the paper that is cluttering your space inside the box. Immediately you declare bankruptcy on this paper.
Your desk and work space feels lighter and you can think clearly. It’s a great feeling. It’s also a great feeling because you haven’t thrown anything away. You don’t have that stress of wondering if you will need to reference something later.
Then, if you are like me, you can take that box into your living room, put on a fun TV show and slowly go through the paper and categorize it as necessary and also, discard what is no longer necessary or useful to you.
I also use this method to grab my laptop and make a list of notes or to-dos so that I can throw away the little post-it note and have only one piece of paper moving forward. And let’s be real, I’ll probably print that piece of paper and tuck it into my paper planner, but at least it’s just one piece of paper.
I needed to declare paper bankruptcy for my mental health and if you walk into your work space and see piles of paper, I invite you to also declare paper bankruptcy and see how it feels.
If you are interested in a proven path to diminish paper clutter, check out the Everyday Happiness link in the show notes to the Paper Cleanse. Until next time, remember, kindness is contagious.

311-Decluttering For More Intentional Margins

Banishing the piles of paper and the clutter in favor of a more tidy space not only allows you to have more Intentional Margins®, it also promotes happiness.

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and yesterday we talked about our surroundings and how they contribute to our happiness. When our surroundings are less cluttered, we feel calm. When we feel calm we are contributing positively to our mental health. Let’s be real. When I’m not calm it feels like a squirrel with ADD in my brain. That does not feel like happiness. Like fulfilled happiness. It feels overwhelming. When I am sitting in a cluttered office or the kitchen counter has a stack of mail from the last few weeks - oh yeah, I’ve been there - it feels overwhelming. And that doesn’t make me feel all the happy vibes. So our surroundings matter. Come on. You know this. You know the feeling when your house is clean. Or, my favorite, when you walk into a hotel room - it’s pristine. No stuff - until you unpack - but that’s a different episode.
I always say, randomness causes overwhelm. If you don’t know exactly how you are going to process your mail, if you don’t have a system or a habit, it feels hard every time. And you know what our brains do when something feels hard. They push it aside and say “not today”. Yeah - that’s how we end up with piles of paper.
This is why my dear friend C Lee started helping people cleanse. Cleanse the paper. Banish the piles with her super simple KARMA system. So that we can get back that time, create Intentional Margins to focus on what matters most. Isn’t that what we all want? To spend less time dealing with paper and more time living in our Intentional Margins? That’s what I want. Which is why I am proud to share this quick course with you - so that you can have a little more time confetti in your day and reduce your stress, because you won’t be looking at piles of paper that need your attention.
When we clear our physical space, it is beneficial to our well-being. Moreover, “Fresh air and sunshine make us happier and healthier. A bright room can boost your mood and decrease depression and anxiety.“
We have the tools to clear the clutter and refresh our spaces. If sorting paper is something you want to tackle, you can click on the show notes for the Everyday Happiness link that directs you to the course to learn more. I’ll see you there. And in the meantime, open the windows and let the sunshine in. Until next time, remember, Kindness is contagious.

310-Does Clutter Contribute To Happiness?
Thursday Apr 07, 2022

When your physical space is cluttered, your well-being suffers.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and if you are anything like me, the past two years of more time at home that before has really opened my eyes to reflect on my personal space.
The science indicates that your physical space contributes to your emotional well-being. Today, I wanted to talk about our office space as so many of us are working from home. Even if it is not a physical office, there are spaces in our homes where we do some sort of work. And, if we’re getting granular, everyone has some place that they do the work of running the household.
My friend C Lee has a great program and she’s come up with a brilliant system - called KARMA - to tackle the paper. So much paper. And what I love about this system, is that it’s for digital dinosaurs. It’s for those of us that still like paper and have no intention of scanning everything and putting it on a harddrive.
The research says that clutter “makes it difficult to think efficiently because when you’re processing so much external stimuli, it’s hard to solve problems and make good decisions.” Let’s be real, we didn’t need science to tell us that. We feel it. Am I right or am I right?
I am always more relaxed and more creative when I have a tidy space to work. The piles that stack up in the to-do pile get bigger and bigger and seem like a mountain of overwhelm that I push to the side. Well, that isn’t helping me emotionally. So this paper system was perfect for me. I invite you to check it out for yourself, C Lee does a class a couple times a year to help you sort those piles and banish the mountains of paper for good. The course is open right now, but only for a few days, so if you are curious, check it out. You can click the show notes for a direct link, through Everyday Happiness. Until next time, let’s toss 10 pieces of paper today and see how that feels.

309-Success Won’t Make You Happy
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Today we chat about a reel I saw on Instagram from Jay Shetty, where he says success and happiness are two different paths. If you think success will make you happy, you're wrong.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness, where we create lasting happiness in two-ish minutes a day through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host, Katie Jefcoat, and I was watching a reel on Instagram. I mean, we're all watching reels nowadays, right? So this reel was from Jay Shetty, where he says success and happiness are two different paths. If you think success will make you happy, you're wrong.
He says success is great, but happiness has to be equally pursued, and it's a completely different path. He also says that becoming successful is not going to make you more joyful. Well, that's insightful, right? And I couldn't agree more.
So many of us chase the success, the job promotion, the amount of followers on our social media that we think quantifies our success. But in fact, none of that matters if we are also not pursuing happiness. So we need to pursue both paths. How do we do that?
Well, we can start with a gratitude habit. Three different gratitudes every single day, written down on a piece of paper. That can be a great way to start to boost our happiness. Of course, we can take it a step further and be extra kind to someone. Make it a habit of sending a voice text or a postcard to someone every single day that's on your mind.
Think about how that could not only boost your happiness, but have a ripple effect in so many ways. So I'm curious, if you were going to start to take a step on that happiness path, what would be your first step? Tell me over on social at @everydayhappinesswithkatie. I can't wait to hear what you're your first step is.

308-Reframing Our Mindset When We Could Easily Be Annoyed
Tuesday Apr 05, 2022

Welcome to Everyday Happiness, where we create lasting happiness in two-ish minutes a day through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host, Katie Jefcoat, and I was sitting in my back porch the other day, and on the other side of the trees in my yard is a daycare, so kids under five (not yet in elementary school). I'm in a pretty urban part of town, and I could hear the kids yelling and laughing and yelling and yelling.
And for a moment I was thinking, this isn't very zen. And then I thought, "Wow, those little voices are so darn cute." They are having so much fun. And what a joy, what a privilege to hear kids laughter; to hear their happiness.
I imagine them playing tag and some random game that they just made up on the spot with rules that are constantly changing. You know the one, right? We've all been there.
And so today, as I'm reflecting on these joyful yet noisy little kids that I can hear in my backyard, I want to invite you to flip the script when you think something is annoying or inconvenient and just see if there is a better way to view that experience.
And so if you find that there is a way that you have flipped the script, that you have made the change, let me know because I want to celebrate you and I want to show up for you.
So send me a DM, tag me in your Instagram stories or however you like to connect. And let's cheer each other on when we can flip the script. Alright, until next time. You can find me at @everydayhappinesswithkatie, and don't forget, kindness is contagious.

307-The Building Blocks Of Happiness
Monday Apr 04, 2022
Monday Apr 04, 2022
What builds our happiness? That’s what we discuss today. Tune in.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and we’re breaking down the building blocks of happiness.
Happiness scientists seem to agree that happiness is a two-pronged definition. The first prong is happiness in emotions. The second prong is satisfaction and purpose. You need both prongs to be fulfilled to achieve well-rounded happiness.
With that, there are three basic building blocks that determine one’s happiness. They are:
- Genetics
- Circumstances and luck - some experts also call this your surroundings, and
- Your portfolio of habits
So how does this work? Imagine a pie chart. Roughly 50% of that pie chart is your genetic makeup. Then you have about 25% that are your circumstances and surroundings. Some experts think it might be less, but we’re talking ball-park numbers here. And that leaves about 25% of your happiness that is absolutely in your control, these are our habits, etc.
Frankly, that’s really all we need to make a big difference in our well-being. So this is where we focus, on the part we can control.
This looks like introducing the habits outlined in episode 306. Listening to this podcast everyday, which is a reminder to choose happiness. It also looks like prioritizing connection with the people you care about that also have a positive impact on you. Look, nobody has time for connection with the jerk down the street, so this is being intentional about connecting with others. But we know, connection is a big part of happiness.
So, tell me, how are you going to prioritize your happiness today? I’m over on social @everydayhappinesswithkatie and I would love to connect with you!

306-How To Train Your Brain For More Positivity?
Sunday Apr 03, 2022
Sunday Apr 03, 2022
The five steps to boost happiness in today’s episode.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and today we are continuing our discussion on training our brains to think more positively.
Shawn Anchor, New York Times Bestselling Author and happiness expert says that if you, for 21 days, practice any of these things I am going to outline in a minute, these small things, you can create a ripple the effect in your brain and scientifically change the neurons in your brain to be a more positive person. That’s incredible and honestly, none of these ideas are new.
There are five things we can do, today, to start to create new neuro-pathways in our brains and become more positive and happier.
First is three new gratitudes each day. This looks like writing in a gratitude journal at least three new gratitudes every single day.
Second, Shawn Anchor is big on journaling. He says, journal about one positive experience you’ve had over the last twenty-four hours. Really think about all of the details, all of the emotion, re-live that experience while writing it into your journal.
Third is that exercise teaches your brain that your body matters and he says, we need to get out and move our bodies.
Fourth, meditate. He thinks meditation helps us to get over the cultural ADHD when we multitask. I can see that. But if meditation is not your thing, don’t put pressure on yourself.
Finally, he says random acts of kindness are a sure-fire way to start that change to develop a more positive mindset. His example was so simple: If we can get people to open their email and praise or thank one person in their social or support network every day, we can create change. Of course, I think handwriting three sentences on a postcard would be going the extra mile.
If we do these things, we can re-train our brains to think more positively and create a ripple revolution. Which leads to more happiness - scientifically.
I’m curious, where will you start today, let me know - I’m over @everydayhappinesswithkatie.

305-How Does Your Brain Process The World?
Saturday Apr 02, 2022
Saturday Apr 02, 2022
Happiness expert Shawn Anchor says that 90% of our long term happiness is predicted by the way our brain processes the world. So what does that mean? We discuss his findings today.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and Shawn Anchor, New York Times Bestselling Author, talks a lot about happiness in the workplace. In his viral Ted Talk, he shared that his research indicates that 10% of your predicted long-term happiness is your surroundings and 90% of your long term happiness is predicted by the way your brain processes the world.
He goes on to say that he’s found that 75% of your job success is based on your optimism, your social support and your ability to see stress as a challenge instead of a threat. Only 25% is actually based on IQ.
He has a fascinating idea that the absence of disease is not health. The absence of happiness is not sadness. He argues we need to reverse the formula of happiness and success. He thinks the concept of working harder = being more successful = then I will be happier, is the wrong way to approach life. What happens is we achieve the milestone and our brain puts out a new milestone. Hit that sales goal, now move the goalpost. Get into that great school, now get into another one.
The real problem is that our brains work in the opposite order. We want to be happy in the moment, that’s the advantage - the success edge. When our brains are positive, they perform better than when they are negative, neutral or stressed. His research indicates that your brain at positive is 31% more productive than you are if your brain is negative, neutral or stressed. That’s 31% better in sales, but that’s also 31% better for doctors and other professions where our lives are on the line.
What if we reverse the formula. How do we actually do it? That's what we are going to dive into tomorrow. How we train our brains to become more positive.

304-Feeling Happy When You Also Fee The Weight Of The World
Friday Apr 01, 2022
Friday Apr 01, 2022
Today we talk about how happiness is more important now than ever, even as it feels like the world right now is in a state of chaos.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I’m in my feelings. I thought you might be too, so I recorded this episode for us. As a reminder. Save this episode and refer back to it as often as needed.
We can be happy AND we can feel like the sky is falling. We can see the injustice of war on the other side of the planet, feel that pain, and still be happy.
The world right now is in a state of chaos, from a two-year-long pandemic to soaring gas prices to lives simply not going back to the way they once were. So how does one define happiness in a world of chaos?
Fortunately, happiness is something that we can focus on and pursue even with outside forces beyond our control are making life more challenging than expected.
Happiness scientists have gone round and round about how to define happiness. Arthur Brooks, an accomplished scientist and professor at the Harvard Business School, and Sonja Lyubomirsky, a positive psychology researcher and author, have done an excellent job encapsulating happiness research and elaborating on this well-established definition.
Happiness scientists seem to agree that happiness is a two-pronged definition. The first prong is
happiness in emotions. The second prong is satisfaction and purpose. You need both prongs to be fulfilled to achieve well-rounded happiness. We talk about this a lot in this podcast.
But what’s interesting right now, is that when the news is blaring all the bad things, we can forget that happiness is from within.
And frankly, we can’t give what we don’t have and who wants to live in a world of so much unhappiness. If we want to share happiness and joy, it has to start from within us, which is why happiness is so important when it feels like the sky is falling.
Even when the world is cruel, I would argue that it is our responsibility to find the moments of joy and spread kindness wherever we can and it does not decrease our sensitivity and our compassion for what’s happening around the world or in our backyard because there will always be bad things that are happening.
It’s not fair to yourself or the people around you to dim your light. Who is that helping? If your family is enjoying family game night or you get a chance to do something really cool - share about it, it inspires others to know there is happiness too.
And as always, kindness is contagious - even and especially when the world feels heavy. Go out there and spread some kindness today.
