Do you feel overwhelmed with your todo list? Is "creating fulfilling happiness" missing from that list? Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat is here to help you. In 2-minutes a day, over time, you’ll discover how to reduce overwhelm and create lasting happiness through Katie’s signature method of Intentional Margins, happiness science, and musings about life. Start your day with a positive mindset. Many of us can get deep in the feeling of overwhelm. The anxiety of our own ambition can weigh heavily on our thoughts and emotions. We lay down and close our eyes at night and our chest begins to feel heavy. More items on the to-do list than the day before. How will we ever going to get off the hamster wheel of to-dos? When are we going to start living life for more than the hustle? As a recovering lawyer and passion driven entrepreneur, Katie knew something had to change. What she found is that you can have harmony, be intentionally productive and create massive impact, all at the same time - without feeling guilty. So she asked herself a simple question: "How can I get off the hamster wheel and how can I show others how to do the same? She knew she'd had a system for herself, but she’d never put it into defining words. On August 15, 2019, she sat down at her dining room table with her friend Jenna (her business bestie). Post-It notes covering the table. This is where she first defined the concept of Intentional Margins. What are Intentional Margins? INTENTIONAL MARGINS™ (n): A buffer of space and time to create harmony between your to-do’s and your priorities. Now you can get the support you need to manage your overwhelm, one little tip at a time. Regardless of the industry, Everyday Happiness blends inspiration with a pragmatic approach to finding Harmony. You'll be encouraged to throw “balance” out the window for a more achievable approach called harmony. Through Intentional Margins™, you'll be encouraged to develop what harmony means to you, by identifying your priorities at work and at home. Every day, we'll end the podcast help you feel equipped to jump off the hamster wheel of overwhelm and go out there and crush your day. --About the Host-- Katie Jefcoat is a community curator, speaker, author and motivator who supports ambitious women (and a few good men) move from feeling hectic to harmonious. As a recovering trial lawyer, she knows first hand what it feels like to have a demanding job. As an entrepreneur with a passion that lights her hair on fire and a busy family she’s in the thick of it with you. Many people strive for balance and think overwhelm is just a part of life. Sadly, the hustle culture and our never-ending to-do list is creating a life where our priorities are getting the leftover scraps of time. Katie introduces people to what she calls - Intentional Margins™ - a kind of life in which they reduce randomness, create harmony between their to-dos and their priorities and intentionally enjoy the meaningful parts of life - without feeling guilty. Without exposure to a different way, we remain stuck on the hamster wheel of to-dos and never find the “balance” we yearn for. Katie works diligently to expose her community to different ways of doing things, because she fundamentally believes we deserve to make time for our priorities. We deserve to live a life of harmony. And it’s within our control to create it. Katie curates a smorgasbord of content related to managing your calendar, handling overwhelm, setting boundaries, reducing randomness, saying no, self-care, the power of your choices, and more in her Intentional Margins™ Membership Community -- which she calls the coziest virtual coffee shop (on Facebook). Let's be honest; not every day is a happy day. Sometimes we are sad, angry, tired, or just BLAH! Understanding and accepting that happiness isn't a constant is healthy, especially if you can take measures to embrace it. Learn more today!

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and sometimes, we just have a bad day. This doesn’t mean that we are unhappy people. Happiness is just one of the many emotions we get to experience, throughout our day, or week, the month. It’s healthy to ebb and flow. It would be very weird to be happy all the time.
My DNA, which we know is really high. I am a glass ½ full kinda person every single time. But the other day, I was just, well, blah. I wasn’t happy or sad or angry or upset. I couldn’t name my emotion except that it was blah and that was turning into ambivalence toward my work, lack of inspiration to create, and lack of motivation to push through this feeling of blah. Adam Grant refers to this feeling as languishing.
So, I walked out of my office, turned on a home design show on Netflix, invited my daughter to watch it with me (core value of connection + family), and just did that. Yes, I am fully aware that taking any time off midday is an incredible luxury given the economic challenges millions face. It’s something I do not take lightly or for granted.
I am sharing this with you because I want you to ask yourself, what could you do? Sometimes, it’s just leaning into that feeling, having confidence that it too shall pass. Now, I’m not a doctor, if you are struggling with feelings of low mood, or something bigger, consider contacting a health professional.
And, I hope the next time you have a bad day or a off-mood, you know you’re not alone and the feelings will pass. I’m rooting for you.

In this wrap-up episode of our Wabi Sabi series, we discuss how we can take these ancient philosophies and adopt them into modern living.

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and over the past two episodes, we have talked about the philosophies of Wabi Sabi and Kintsugi. Today we are wrapping up our conversation by discussing ways you can utilize these philosophies in modern life.
First, you can use this principle to declutter your space and focus on function rather than material possessions and status. Through a sparse space, you can gain tranquility and appreciate what you already have.
Second, focus on simplicity. A single flower in a charming old vase brings just as much joy as an expensive bouquet in a brand new shiny vase.
Third, and I have mentioned this before, forget the busy badge. The USA places pride in being busy, but being busy doesn't make you happy. Slow down, appreciate the small moments in life, and choose a balanced life over a hectic one.
Fourth, practice mindfulness. There are so many beautiful things and moments to enjoy in this life, but they can often become forgotten in a fast-paced world. Again, slow down and savor what's right in front of you.
Lastly, appreciate kintsugi. We are not immortal; nothing in or around us is. Rather than noticing the flaws, find beauty and appreciation in the passage of time and the struggles of life. Remember, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Wisdom, maturity, and life's most important values don't come from constantly receiving success; they come from struggling, making mistakes, and being broken. For when we heal, we come back better than ever before.
What do you think of the Wabi Sabi lifestyle? Let me know by shooting me a DM over at Everyday Happiness.

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and yesterday, we delved into the concept of the Wabi Sabi lifestyle, and today we are expanding this teaching by talking about the art of kintsugi (kin-sugi), which literally means to join with gold.
Kintsugi is a Japanese art form of mending broken ceramics with lacquer and powdered gold. Instead of trying to hide the evidence of the break or throwing away an old ceramic, it emphasizes the repair of the item in a glorious way.
The practice came from 14th century Japan, when the third Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, broke his favorite tea bowl. Not wanting to throw it away, he sent it off to China to be repaired….but upon its return, he was horrified. The bowl had been put back together with ugly staples. Unpleased with this, the Shogun summoned his best artisans to find an alternative solution, which is how kintsugi came to be and is now represented as a philosophy of life.
In today’s world, we place youth, beauty, and perfection on a pedestal, often trying to hide away scars and the ugly pieces of life. But friend, we all know that life is not always perfect. We get terrible things thrown at us, which can leave us broken. And that’s okay!
Following the kintsugi theory, we can use it as a metaphor for life. Yes, we may be broken, beaten down, or scarred. However, we can heal through trauma and come back stronger and more beautiful than before. We don't need to hide away our scars; we can be proud of the pieces of ourselves that we have mended back together through wisdom, hard work, and dedication. There is beauty in imperfection, pain, and the passage of time.
Are you curious about how you can use Wabi Sabi in your own life? I encourage you to tune in tomorrow for a wrap-up of this miniseries, where we discuss how to apply Wabi Sabi and Kintsugi to our lifestyles.

In this episode of Everyday Happiness, we talk about the theory of Wabi Sabi and how we can incorporate this philosophy into our lives.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about Wabi Sabi. Wabi Sabi is a Japanese concept that encompasses the beauty of imperfection, the impermanence of life, and the simplicity of the world around us. While it may seem like a funny word, this teaching is a beautiful theory that can be adopted into our lives.
In our Western World, there is a love of perfection, balance, and the idea of permanence. We can find it in our architecture, art, fashion, and beauty standards. On the contrary, Japan has a different concept of the beautiful, which we have no word for in English, Wabi Sabi.
Wabi Sabi shows respect for the passage of time and how everything in life ages, faces challenges, and eventually breaks. It is the appreciation of imperfection, impermanence, and the melancholy.
As a brief history lesson, Wabi Sabi has developed over time, right down to the meaning of the word. It truly began to come to play in 15th century Japan in the tea ceremony. The original tea ceremony was designed to keep monks awake during long periods of Zen meditation, but the shoguns of Japan overtook it as a way to be flashy and show off their wealth.
One tea master found this convoluted practice of the tradition unacceptable, so he redesigned the tea ceremony to emphasize the teachings of Wabi Sabi. Rather than the glitz and glamor of the ceremony, it focuses on the reality of life, aging, and incompleteness.
To put it simply, it rests on these seven aesthetic principles: simplicity, asymmetry, the beauty of the understated, naturalness without pretension, subtle grace, freeness, and tranquility.
Wabi Sabi can be found all around us if we so choose. Instead of seeing ugliness in a face full of wrinkles, you see a life filled with laughter and smiles. Rather than discarding a worn blanket, you cherish it as representing hundreds of snuggles, movie nights, and loving moments. I think you get where I am going with this. We can see the world through whatever lens we choose.
Hopefully, this philosophy has inspired you, but we aren't quite done yet. Tune in tomorrow for a bit more Japanese philosophy that you can adopt into modern life with the art of Kintsugi.

419-Building Happiness with Playfulness
Monday Jul 25, 2022
Monday Jul 25, 2022
How often are you playful? Does the wonder of life get lost in the seriousness of adulthood? In this episode of Everyday Happiness, we discuss building happiness with playfulness.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today I want to talk to you about playful intelligence. I was reading an article in Psychology Today by Dr. Anthony DeBenedet on the subject, and it got me thinking about how hard it can be to be playful in adult life.
Before I go into that, I want to take a moment to differentiate between “play” and “playfulness.” Play is an action we take to have fun. It could be going to the movies, shooting hoops, or initiating a game of tag with the kids.
Playfulness, however, is a set of behaviors. It is the tendency to laugh, smile, or do other silly things that take the action of "play" and transform it into a feeling of happiness.
As we grow older, playfulness can become harder. Many of us get caught up in the seriousness of life and often go through the motions of "play" without actually reaping the benefits. Or, if we do manage to get some playfulness in, it quickly gets worn down by the stress of other things on our to-do lists. That's where playful intelligence comes in; it is (and I quote) the "working knowledge of how playfulness influences the internal and external aspects of adult life."
While I am not saying that you should become Peter Pan and disregard the aspects of adult life, I am saying that we need to build a framework in our minds that recognizes the need for playfulness and allows us to utilize it. How, you ask?
Dr. DeBenedet states that the five playful behaviors that seem to hold the highest value in adulthood are imagination, sociability, humor, spontaneity, and wonder.
So, the next time you feel down, overwhelmed, stressed, and unable to smile even when you are "playing," I encourage you to embrace one or more of these behaviors. For example, you could draw a chalk masterpiece with the kids on the driveway, surprise your spouse with a date night, take the time to appreciate a beautiful flower, make a coffee date with your bestie, or find a good ole knock-knock joke to tell at the office.
Remember, you have the power to create a happier life, so try making playful intelligence an Intentional Margin this week!

418-The Happiest Country on Earth
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
Sunday Jul 24, 2022
Have you ever wondered where the happiest place on earth is? Maybe, you think of a mountain cabin or a deserted island, but what if I told you there is a country with that title? Check out my new blog post to find out where it is!
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about the happiest country on Earth. In a previous episode, we spoke of the Gross National Happiness Index created by Bhutan. This concept was introduced to the United Nations about a decade ago, and they adopted it. Since 2012, the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (phew…that's a long name) has published its World Happiness Report.
The report is a modified version of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness index, utilizing data from six areas of life: GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support, trust and corruption, perceived freedom to make life decisions, and generosity. To make this report, 1,000 random people in each UN member state complete a survey.
In the 2022 World Happiness Report, we learn about the happiest country on Earth. Drumroll please…… Finland! For the 5th year in a row, Finland has ranked as number 1 in happiness with a score of 7.821 on the scale. While many factors play into why this is, many speculate that it largely has to do with the country's educational structure.
Not only is Finland one of the top-ranking educational systems in the world, often beating out Asian countries like South Korea and Japan, but their educational foundation is based less on quantitative testing and more on experiential learning. What does that mean? It means that Finland focuses less on making their students memorize facts from a book but on learning how and why things work to form the answers themselves.
Getting back to the World Happiness Report, are you wondering how the USA placed? We came in at 16th with 6.977. As a first-world, powerhouse country…that's not all that great, to be honest. But it could be worse! How can we fix this? Well, happiness needs to be a national goal, but you can start by creating a happier life for yourself and those around you. Remember, small actions lead to a remarkable change. Therefore, I challenge you to make the country a little happier today by doing something kind for yourself and someone else. Kindness is contagious, after all!

417-Discussing Cherophobia
Saturday Jul 23, 2022
Saturday Jul 23, 2022
Do you suffer from cherophobia? Tune in to this episode of Everyday Happiness to find what this phobia is and how you can overcome it!
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about cherophobia (chero-pho-bi-a). The term "chero" comes from the Greek, meaning "to rejoice." Therefore, cherophobia is the fear or irrational aversion to being happy to participate in events that would be characterized as “fun.”
Now, you may be thinking, where are you going with this, Katie. Hold on; I am getting to it. I am a big believer in gaining knowledge about this amazing world and the inner workings of our brains. However, there isn’t much data on Cherophobia so far.
Medical experts who have investigated this condition classify it as an anxiety disorder, but it can be hard to diagnose. Here are a few examples of the symptoms reported by Healthline.
- “experiencing anxiety at the thought of going to a joyful social gathering, like a party, concert, or other similar events
- rejecting opportunities that could lead to positive life changes due to fear that something bad will follow
- refusal to participate in activities that most would call fun”
Positive Psychology also notes that some may experience cherophobia because they believe being happy makes you a worse person or that sharing your happiness could cause feelings of envy, guilt, or discord with others.
Are any of these feelings ringing a bell? If so, I highly recommend speaking with a licensed psychologist about this; don’t simply self-diagnosis! Fortunately, there are ways to combat this fear, whether it is a phobia or just a habit. Some remedies include cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, happiness routines, and more!
As humans, we all have challenges to face and overcome. Being aware is the first step; taking action comes next. I believe in you!
Plus, remember that giving kindness can boost your own happiness. Start the chain of happiness today by performing a random act of kindness, like holding open the door for someone or sending a kindness card!
And, if you are enjoying this podcast, smash the subscribe button and leave a 5-star review. It helps us spread more kindness into the world and we invite you to be a part of that.

416-Finding Happiness in Loss
Friday Jul 22, 2022
Friday Jul 22, 2022
Finding happiness after a loss can be challenging and just out of reach. Today, I share a few techniques on how to rediscover joy once again.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about loss. This episode is inspired by a friend and listener of this podcast who recently lost her father to a long-term illness. She explained that while this was a long-time coming, the passing was still tremendously hard for her to cope with, and she had trouble finding happiness again.
Grief and the acceptance of a loved one's death are complex, with each person finding their own path through the emotions. Today, I want to share with you a few methods to finding happiness again from a psychotherapist featured on Psychology Today.
First, practicing mindfulness and allowing ourselves to feel our emotions. I know it can be tempting to numb our feelings with avoidance, but we also numb ourselves to joyful moments. Therefore, it is essential to experience our feelings without judgment.
Second, let your emotions out. Experiencing emotions is one thing, but sometimes we must use them to let them out fully. Writing, painting, drawing, cooking, and any other creative expression can help.
Third, practice self-care. Again, it is tempting to hole up and avoid the world when we are sad. But an unhealthy body will only make us feel worse. We must continue our normal healthcare routines, including eating well, sleeping, drinking water, and exercising.
Fourth, savor simple pleasures and live well. Loss is a great reminder of how short life truly is. Taking the time to enjoy the simple yet meaningful moments of joy can be all the more impactful. It could be as poetic as smelling the roses, as easy as enjoying a hug, or as goofy as playing a prank on a friend. You can use this unfortunate reality to remind you to be intentional with your life, prioritize what truly matters, and find happiness wherever it calls.
Now, I am not going to say that this will cure sadness or pain, but practicing these techniques, will help you through the grieving process and find happiness once again. Additionally, I highly recommend speaking with a professional, whether you are having trouble processing these emotions or simply need someone to talk to. There is no shame in knowing when to ask for help.
Lastly, remember that kindness is contagious. We never know when someone is going through a rough time. So, please spread a spark of joy by being kind to someone today.

415-Gross National Happiness Index
Thursday Jul 21, 2022
Thursday Jul 21, 2022
Have you heard about the Gross National Happiness Index or the GNH? Today we’re discussing the origins of the index, how it works, and how we can use it to build a better, happier country!
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today we are talking about the Gross National Happiness Index or the GNH. The Bhutanese government created the GNH index. In case your geography is a little rusty, Bhutan is a small country in the eastern Himalayan mountains of Asia. Often, it is forgotten due to its weak economic structure and overpowered neighbors of China and India. Still, Bhutan came up with this concept, an idea far more valuable than money, in my opinion.
Much like its name implies, the Gross National Happiness Index measures the total happiness of the country’s citizens. You may be thinking, how does one measure happiness? This tool is actually very well thought out; it uses nine domains supported by 33 indicators to analyze the nation’s wellbeing according to each surveyed person’s achievements in each indicator.
Okay…so? What's the point? Unlike other countries that focus on their GDP as their level of success, Bhutan uses the GNH in every facet of its government. They even use it to guide how policies are designed to create greater wellbeing and happiness for their people rather than focusing on monetary success. For example, Bhutan is the first and only country in the world to be carbon-negative! Additionally, from 2007 to 2017, they cut poverty from 36% to 12%! That's incredible!
Now, why am I telling you this? Well, often on Everyday Happiness, we talk about personal happiness, but Bhutan is showing the world that national happiness is a concept that is quantitative and can be improved.
How can a country get on this happiness train? It would likely take a shift in mindset. Bhutan is fortunate to have this ingrained into their way of life already due to the country's practice of Buddhist beliefs. But you don't have to be Buddhist to create a national change; you just have to have enough people aware of the concept and willing to vouch for it. The GNH is still a relatively new idea, but there are already small regions in the world testing it out. What do you think? Is this a concept you would want to be incorporated into your government? Shoot me a message over at Everyday Happiness!

Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I was talking with a friend the other day about just how busy her schedule was and how she didn’t think she had a free moment to savor an experience, identify her North star, or just take a deep breath. She was time famished and it was affecting her happiness and daily satisfaction. You see, she was checking all the todo boxes, but she wasn’t feeling fulfilled. Has that ever happened to you? What we find is that checking off the todo list does not bring us the fulfillment we’re after.
We can hack this feeling of busyness by prioritizing something calm and fulfilling for you. This could be a cup of coffee in the morning before anyone else wakes up, perhaps with a book or just time with your own thoughts. Even meditation. Now, I’ll admit, for me, waking up early during the summer is harder - but I know how good it is for my day. But, because sleep is my number one priority, I need to back out what time I want to wake up with what time I want to fall asleep. It’s all connected.
The point is that we have some choice. Whether we think we do right now or not. When we take agency for ourselves, our happiness grows. Take a deep breath friend, where are your 5 minutes of time confetti today? Maybe it’s even longer?
