Do you feel overwhelmed with your todo list? Is "creating fulfilling happiness" missing from that list? Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat is here to help you. In 2-minutes a day, over time, you’ll discover how to reduce overwhelm and create lasting happiness through Katie’s signature method of Intentional Margins, happiness science, and musings about life. Start your day with a positive mindset. Many of us can get deep in the feeling of overwhelm. The anxiety of our own ambition can weigh heavily on our thoughts and emotions. We lay down and close our eyes at night and our chest begins to feel heavy. More items on the to-do list than the day before. How will we ever going to get off the hamster wheel of to-dos? When are we going to start living life for more than the hustle? As a recovering lawyer and passion driven entrepreneur, Katie knew something had to change. What she found is that you can have harmony, be intentionally productive and create massive impact, all at the same time - without feeling guilty. So she asked herself a simple question: "How can I get off the hamster wheel and how can I show others how to do the same? She knew she'd had a system for herself, but she’d never put it into defining words. On August 15, 2019, she sat down at her dining room table with her friend Jenna (her business bestie). Post-It notes covering the table. This is where she first defined the concept of Intentional Margins. What are Intentional Margins? INTENTIONAL MARGINS™ (n): A buffer of space and time to create harmony between your to-do’s and your priorities. Now you can get the support you need to manage your overwhelm, one little tip at a time. Regardless of the industry, Everyday Happiness blends inspiration with a pragmatic approach to finding Harmony. You'll be encouraged to throw “balance” out the window for a more achievable approach called harmony. Through Intentional Margins™, you'll be encouraged to develop what harmony means to you, by identifying your priorities at work and at home. Every day, we'll end the podcast help you feel equipped to jump off the hamster wheel of overwhelm and go out there and crush your day. --About the Host-- Katie Jefcoat is a community curator, speaker, author and motivator who supports ambitious women (and a few good men) move from feeling hectic to harmonious. As a recovering trial lawyer, she knows first hand what it feels like to have a demanding job. As an entrepreneur with a passion that lights her hair on fire and a busy family she’s in the thick of it with you. Many people strive for balance and think overwhelm is just a part of life. Sadly, the hustle culture and our never-ending to-do list is creating a life where our priorities are getting the leftover scraps of time. Katie introduces people to what she calls - Intentional Margins™ - a kind of life in which they reduce randomness, create harmony between their to-dos and their priorities and intentionally enjoy the meaningful parts of life - without feeling guilty. Without exposure to a different way, we remain stuck on the hamster wheel of to-dos and never find the “balance” we yearn for. Katie works diligently to expose her community to different ways of doing things, because she fundamentally believes we deserve to make time for our priorities. We deserve to live a life of harmony. And it’s within our control to create it. Katie curates a smorgasbord of content related to managing your calendar, handling overwhelm, setting boundaries, reducing randomness, saying no, self-care, the power of your choices, and more in her Intentional Margins™ Membership Community -- which she calls the coziest virtual coffee shop (on Facebook). 579-New Year’s Resolution Origins
Sunday Jan 01, 2023
Sunday Jan 01, 2023
Have you ever been curious about where the New Year’s resolution tradition comes from? In this episode of Everyday Happiness, we discuss the history of the practice and how it often fails.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and today and tomorrow, I want to talk about New Year’s resolutions and how they affect our happiness. But first, have you ever wondered where this tradition came from? As I was researching this episode, I was surprised that the origin of this practice goes back 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. Apparently, they made a form of New Year’s resolution in March, a time for planting new seeds. They would promise the gods to fulfill debts, return objects, and reaffirm their loyalty to their king. It was believed that if they completed their resolutions, the gods would shine favorably on them in the new year…but bad luck was coming for them if they didn't.
The tradition was moved to January 1st by Julius Caesar, the famed king who changed the calendar. January was named for the two-faced god, Janus, whose power allowed him to see back to the previous year and ahead to the future. During that time, people sacrificed to the god while making promises of good conduct in the new year.
Later, the tradition was adopted into Christianity as a time to reflect on past mistakes and make resolutions to be better in the new year. Today, almost 45% of Americans now take part in this tradition…but are they successful? Unfortunately, not.
Research shows that only 9 to 12% of people actually keep their New Year’s resolutions…even when 52% of people thought that they would be successful.
Tomorrow, we will dive into how our New Year’s resolutions affect us and what we can do to achieve our goals.

As we look back on 2022, I want to share with you a few things I am doing to create some Intentional Margins® for my highest priorities.
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and as a natural consequence to the closing of yet another year, we find ourselves closing loose ends and focusing on aspirations for 2023. Which can be so fun, especially if you are a future thinker like me.
I think a lot of it is human nature. We want something to look forward to. The past few years have felt different for a lot of folks, me included. It’s different kinds of things now. Today I wanted to share with you how I am living in my Intentional Margins® this week. One of my focuses last year and next is to connect with my kids. I see them growing up so fast and as I've mentioned in previous episodes, I look at my high schooler and can count the summers we have with her at home. And the 3 more proms and school musicals and it just feels like time is slipping by. So quality time with the children has been top of mind for me.
For me, this time of year, my Intentional Margins® surround the theme of quality time with the people I love, both together and separately. The past week or so, we’ve cooked. My daughter really enjoys cooking and baking and she’s quite good at it, so we have a few recipes we tried out. These are the times I think, I’ll look back on and want to remember, the best parts of life. So, I’m making the Intentional Margin® to make time and be present.
We’ve also been obsessed with the board game Catan, as a family. So we’ve had a few late nights and afternoon board game battles. As a family we got an expansion pack for Christmas so the game just got a lot more complicated. And it’s really fun to play games with the kids.
I hope this inspires you to think about something special you could do with someone you love, make a memory, spend some quality time together, play a game, do a puzzle, there are so many options. It doesn’t have to be this big thing and it also doesn’t have to take a long time. It’s more about being intentional and present. I invite you to add an Intentional Margin® to your todo list today.
Until next time. Kindness is Contagious.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Angela Williamson and today I share how self-care contributes to my happiness.
Transcript:
Hey there. You're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm taking over. I'm Angela Williamson. And Katie asked me this question, how does self care contribute to your happiness?
We should learn a lot about self care and the importance of it, especially with everything that we've been through the last few years. Self care is important and it's not wrong. So what things have I learned to do that helped me move forward to continue with happiness?
In an earlier episode, I talked about my lowest point and where I had to chase my happiness. But you know why I had to chase my happiness? It wasn't just the things that were happening around me, but because I lost the importance of self care.
With all of my happiness journey and the things that I've been sharing with you, I learned the importance of self care. So what do I do?
I actually have a group of friends I call my Zumba buddies, and I do Zumba. Now, I do actually stay in the back, and people think that's so funny that I'm always in the back, because most of my legacy has been spent talking about Rosa Parks and books.
But there's a reason why. It took me a little while to get coordinated to do Zumba. But it really helped. And it wasn't just the exercise. I mean, exercise is important, but it's the relationship that I've been able to form with the most beautiful women and some men in that group.
And so I want to encourage all of you to do something that is in the realm of self care. It may not be Zumba. It may be walking, which I also do. I do that with my husband, and we did that during the pandemic. And there's nothing to strengthen a relationship than to be on a self care journey with the people that you love.
So it is okay. And if you've forgotten a little bit about self care over the last few months and that happens, go back to it and let Katie know what your self care routine is, because we always want to hear from you.
I can't believe this week has gone by so fast. Thanks so much for listening all week, but catch another episode of Everyday Happiness tomorrow, because I know something wonderful will be there for you. Take care.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Angela Williamson and today I share what I’m doing now that brings me happiness.
Transcript:
Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Angela Williamson taking over again.
I'm so excited. And Katie asked me this question, what do you do now that brings happiness? What is your big thing?
Well, my big thing now is being an encourager encouraging others. And I am so excited, so blessed to have the platform to do that on Everybody With Angela Williamson.
I am finding these ordinary people all over and I find that they do extraordinary things and I get to highlight those extraordinary things on the show. And that's so important because I find that I get the greatest satisfaction out of elevating others.
Don't you find that too? And I always heard that advice, I don't know about you, but I am in communications and sometimes in communications you get laid off and you thought what am I going to do? I don't have a job. I need to find another job. But I heard this one time that even if you don't have a job, maybe volunteer. Learn to give time to others because what it does is it strengthens you.
And I kept that in the back of my mind. And so when I'm out and I hear people's stories, I want to encourage them and give them a little bit of a platform to share what they do and that life is all about encouraging others.
Reverend Early said this in my documentary, My Life with Rosie. "We are not all going to be here forever". But you know what will be here forever is how we encourage others and how we support others. So that's what really brings me the biggest happiness. And I do think that's what I was prepared to do.
And so my question to you is think about that. What do you do now that brings you happiness? What is your big thing? And don't be shy about it, let us know because when you tell us now, just like I told you, you are helping someone else. And that's all about what this podcast is for and that's why I'm so honored to be part of it.
I don't know what's happening. I eel like I'm on a roll with this fantastic audience. But hey, I'm not done yet. I will be back tomorrow for another episode. I'm here all week, can't wait to chat with you next.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Angela Williamson and today I share how I try to prevent burnout by focusing on happiness in my business.
Transcript:
Hey there. You're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today, I'm Angela Williamson taking over. I'm back again.
And Katie asked me this question. How do you prevent burnout by focusing on happiness in your business?
Well, there's only one way to do that. Set your intention and understand that sometimes when you have your own business or you have your own endeavor I always like to say endeavors.
Sometimes it's time for you to make a pivot and change. That's okay to do, because when you pivot, that is all a part of your legacy. I actually talk a little bit about in my recent book with these other amazing authors called Leading With Legacy.
One of the things I talk about is that sometimes in your legacy, you have to know when to pivot, because when you learn to pivot is when you make your greatest impact on the world.
One example that I use that I want to share with you is I learned that Rosa Parks had to learn to pivot. She was in Alabama, and that is where the 1955 bus boycott started, but she had to move to Detroit. Well, people think when she moved to Detroit, it all ended. But do you realize one thing she did, is when she made the choice to pivot, she actually had her greatest impact on the civil rights movement.
There are so many things today that are legacies of Rosa Parks that come from when she moved from Alabama to Detroit. And if she had never done that, then we wouldn't have the things that we see today, like her entire nonprofit organization that continues this legacy.
So how do you prevent burnout by focusing on happiness in your business? Understand it's okay to pivot. And when you pivot, you are not going backwards. What you're doing is moving forward and you're leaving your legacy.
I'm done! That was way too quick for me. But guess what? I am going to be back. See you tomorrow for another episode. I am here all week.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Angela Williamson and today I share what advice I would give to my younger self. And wow, it’s advice I still need to give myself today.
Transcript:
Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat, but she's not here. Today, I'm Angela Williamson taking over. And Katie asked me, what advice would you give your younger self? Hey, what advice would I give my younger self?
Well, we don't have to be perfect. Imagine this, and we see it everywhere. We think that we have to be perfect. But what if I continue to live like that and realize that I have to be perfect in everything?
Then I would miss out on one of the greatest opportunities of my entire life, hosting this wonderful show where I meet so many incredible people doing extraordinary things in Los Angeles on KLCS PBS.
You see, in my effort to be perfect, I never wanted to be on camera. Because from the time that I started elementary school, I was in speech therapy. I literally could not talk for the first three years of my elementary years.
And because of that, I always felt I was not perfect enough to be on camera. I stayed behind the camera, and I got to tell some wonderful stories behind the camera.
But sometimes the universe has a way of letting you know that you don't have to be perfect. And it showed me that in 2020 when I was asked to host a show on KLCS PBS. And I will tell you, the person who asked me to do it, of course he has to be the voice of Disneyland.
There's no way I can do something like that. But everything that you do in life, and I mentioned before in the last episode, to chase your happiness, every time you do that, you have to step outside yourself, and it's okay to do that.
I decided there's going to be times I'm not perfect. There are times on the show that they literally have to put words phonetically for me.
But that's okay, because when it's your time to shine, to help others, don't let what you feel your inadequacies are to get in the way. It's OK to not be perfect.
Guess what? I'm back tomorrow. I'm here all week. So see you tomorrow. I cannot wait for our next question.

Hey there, I’m Dr. Angela Williamson and today I share one piece of advice I wish I had known on my happiness journey. Tune in to find out.
Transcript:
Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Angela Williamson taking over. And Katie asked me, what is one piece of advice I wish I had known on my happiness journey?
Well, I just wanted to let you know that one piece of advice I wish I knew, that I want to share with all of you, is that it's okay to chase your happiness. I never realized that. I just thought it was something that would drop into your lap, but it really isn't.
Happiness is an intention, and it's meant for all of us. And it doesn't matter what you're going through. I mean, I just recently had to chase that happiness. And when you chase that happiness, believe it or not, it can make a difference not only in your life, but touch so many other people's lives as well.
So here's one thing that I have to learn to chase. I have this Emmy nominated film, My Life With Rosie. It's been seen all over. It's all over. You can find it all over the web, all over the internet. And I was wondering, after so many years of working with a distribution company, I never really saw any profits from it. So I was wondering why?
Well, unfortunately, over the summer, I found out that the distribution company that I actually partnered with, they sold my documentary. Now, at this point, yes, I can tell you I had to dig deep to find my happiness, but I did.
Now, I don't know what's going to ever happen. The documentary is supposed to be taken down, but it's still all over the internet. But I do know that I can chase and find my happiness with what I do next.
So I set my intention, and my intention was to make sure that nobody ever gets taken advantage of like I did. So what did I do?
I started thinking about how I could teach others. And then because I started just thinking about it, you know it, a few months later, I was asked to create a documentary film course at the community college I currently teach at.
I like how Katie said, it's the musings. So what's the musings behind this?
Well, everyone, with everything that you go through, there's always a time that you will have to chase your happiness. And I want to tell you right now, chase it down, tie it down, and make it all yours. Because when you do that, you are changing not only your life, but you're changing others. And that's okay to do.
So until next time, I will be on the next episode because I'm here all week. See you soon.

Angela: Hi Katie. I'm so honored by that introduction and humbled.
Katie: Well, I am just so excited for everyone that I know to know you. As most of us, if you've been listening to podcasts for a little bit, you know, I'm a connector. I love when people can connect. It is my most favorite thing.
And so I can't wait for people to get to know you. So it's hard to know where to start. But I'm just curious, how did you get into this space, all the passion that you do right now, what led you to what you're working on and all of the magic that you're bringing to so many people right now?
Angela: Well, I think this is why I'm so excited to be on your podcast, because you focus so much on happiness and we see happiness as something that's tangible and sometimes we have to charge our thinking and see happiness as a mindset.
And I am going to be completely transparent with you and have this authentic conversation with you and tell you that how I became the doctor, Angela Williamson that's on your podcast today is that I was really unhappy in 2014 to 2015.
I felt completely lost and because I felt lost, I had pretty much given up on any kind of happiness and having things going on for me. I didn't understand that happiness is a journey. And in your happiness journey, there are going to be times that you need to rear off that path a little bit and come back to it.
And when you come back to it, you have to be determined to go on that path. A lot of times we look at happiness and just think it's something that drops right into our laps.
But we have to realize it's part of our journey and we have to set our intention. And so that is how it all started, was in an effort to gain back happiness in my life, I decided to pick up a mantle that I had put on the shelf for years to move into education, get my doctorate, go back to my other love, video production and tell a story about my husband's cousin, who I always admired growing up but didn't really understand the true story until I started telling it about Rosa Parks.
In telling that story, not just about Rosa Parks, but about all of the women who worked hard to celebrate her life and her legacy, I started to transform from within and find my happiness setting. And in doing all of that and in telling that story, I didn't realize that I was making other people happy as well.
And that's when things started to grow, even to the point where I had to start to mature. And I think when we think about happiness, we have to realize that there's maturity behind it. And when you can start to mature in your happiness and find it, when your path gets a little bit on a detour, is when you start to find your greatest happiness, your greatest hope, but then you start to encourage others as well.
And that started happening with me when I started doing that in 2015. And you even mentioned that I'm on this amazing show on a PBS station, which, as a documentary film producer, as an educator, I mean, you love PBS. I never would have even been able to get into that door if I hadn't looked at a situation that happened to all of us in 2020 with the pandemic and everything shutting down and finding my happiness there.
And that includes doing Facebook live with people like yourself. You are like my first guest on my Facebook Live. I reached out to you, and it's funny. I want to tell your audience. We know each other, but we were never in a book together.
We just met each other and connected. But I didn't realize by just doing those first early days of Facebook live, trying to bring happiness to myself and to my students and to educators, that what we were doing is we were setting the platform for me to have this show, because a producer that was creating that show just happened to catch some of those early Facebook lives.
And so I just think that is really what changed my life to where we're at in 2022, because when I started out and I had to choose my happiness, I can tell everybody I just wanted to be a full time senior professor. That's what I was trying to do. But that didn't happen.
But everything else that has happened has allowed me to fulfill my heart's desire of educating the masses in a form of media that I love, television and film.
Katie: I find that so fascinating because you had this moment in time in 2014, 2015, where you're like, this doesn't feel right. I don't feel authentic. It feels hard. This should not be so hard. And then shortly thereafter you dove into the story of Rosa Parks through your family and how to tell a story from a different perspective, which I think is fascinating.
The documentary is amazing. There's also a book now that you've done on Rosa Parks for children, which is really amazing.
And so through that storytelling you really found, I mean you probably had done things before that I don't know all the details, but you had found this confidence or this voice or this aura about you that's so attractive.
People that are go-getters are attracted to other go-getters. And so you did this and you were like, this feels good. And then you continue down education, helping college students in education. Just one of the ways that we started connecting even more and then Facebook live, you just never know.
There was another person that did these episodes a couple of weeks ago, C.Lee Cawley, and she met a man at a doctor's office. I think they exchanged phone numbers. The man's wife and she became friends, started a mom's group that now has 2500+ paid members because she met a guy at a doctor's office that she said hello to.
So it was like this Facebook live, somebody is seeing something, you just never know. And that's such an important message I really want to zone in on because if you're doing something that lights your hair on fire, if you're doing something you're passionate about, you can't help but attract the right people.
And I think that is just so inspirational and I can't wait for the audience to just get to hear so much goodness and so much juiciness from all of the things that you are about to share over the next five days because it's going to be magic, it's going to be so much fun.
I always, always admire all of your thoughtfulness and so I can't wait to hear what you have to say from some of the questions that I've asked you. And I don't know the answers either.
So I'm going to be tuning in like the rest of us. So thank you.
Angela: You're welcome. And thank you for having me host over the next five days. This is so exciting for me.
Katie: I am just so excited. I can't even tell you. It is a feather in my cap. I'm so excited and I cannot wait. So tomorrow, tune in to hear what Dr. Angela Williamson has to say. She's talking first about one piece of advice that she wished she knew on her happiness journey. And I am sitting at the edge of my chair, I can't wait to hear what you have to say. So until next time, remember, kindness is contagious.

571-Create Holiday Cheer
Saturday Dec 24, 2022
Saturday Dec 24, 2022
Only one day until Christmas...tune in to see how I plan to show up in my Intentional Margins® this holiday season (it’s not always sunshine and rainbows) with some tips to help you over the next couple days. I also invite you to create holiday cheer with a few more helpful tips! 'Tis the season after all!
Transcript:
Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and this time of year can be filled with stress, we know that - heck, we feel that. But it can also be filled with cheer.
It’s a big night in my house. Santa arrives in the morning. The children are already stirring. They’ve got cookies for Santa and a little reindeer food too. But with all the excitement I wanted to reflect on this season.
If you are anything like me, the hustle and bustle of the season has you exhausted. We’ve worked hard for this day. I want to honor that and in doing so, I invite you to grab your coffee, especially if you are listening to this first thing in the morning and gather your thoughts and your appreciation for this season. Appreciation for what you’ve accomplished and what you are about to pull off over the next few days.
For me, this morning looks like sitting in my favorite chair in the living room. It's still dark outside, but the Christmas tree lights are glowing and I am sipping a warm cup of coffee from my favorite Mary Poppins mug. This is when I get to reflect on where we are and what I want to be intentional about today. How do I want to show up for myself and my family? How can I make getting into those matching family jammies fun for my teenager?
Since order is one of my core values, (when there is order I feel way more calm) what can I do to help myself feel like things are in order, while also being in the moment with the family. As I think about this, that looks like a quick prep for lunch this morning, laying out our clothes for the next couple days, and emptying the dishwasher this morning too.
My intention for the day is to be reminded of the little things I love. I will focus on this intention by being present in the moment and reminding myself to savor the moments - as we learned from the happiness professor, Dr. Laurie Santos -- savoring is so important for happiness and today, I intend to savor.
It’s also so much fun to get and give unexpected cheer. It’s one of the happiness science secrets - kindness.
Today, I invite you to give a little holiday cheer to a stranger. It can be wishing a stranger a happy holiday, holding the door for someone and going a step farther and paying them a compliment. It can be a donation to a charity. It can be writing a gratitude card to someone. Whatever it is for you, I invite you to spread some unexpected cheer. Just imagine the ripple effect we could have.
Happy Holidays, whatever holiday you celebrate. Everyone here at Everyday Happiness is wishing you the happiest.
